Thank you for looking at my website. My name is Sharon Osman and I am a Melbourne Celebrant conducting Chinese Weddings. Although I’m not Chinese, or speak the language, I service the Chinese community and travel all over Melbourne to officiate Chinese weddings at very affordable rates.
As a Melbourne Celebrant with deep interest in the culture I have learnt that at traditional Chinese weddings, the tea ceremony is the equivalent of an exchange of vows at a western wedding ceremony. This ritual is still practiced widely among rural Chinese, however some young people who I have married from larger cities, as well as in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore, tend to practice a combination of western style of marriage together with the Tea Ceremony.
In some cases I am asked to preside over just the legal aspects, which I am more than happy to perform.
For over 17 years, I have had the privilege of officiating weddings for many Chinese couples and multicultural families across Melbourne and Victoria. I have married couples where both partners are Chinese, as well as Chinese and Australian, Chinese and Italian, Chinese and Indonesian, and many other beautiful cultural combinations. Every love story is unique, and I believe every ceremony should reflect your personalities, traditions and values.
Whether you are planning a simple legal ceremony, a personalised wedding or wish to incorporate meaningful Chinese customs, I will work closely with you to create a ceremony that feels authentic, heartfelt and memorable. All of my ceremonies are conducted in English, ensuring your legal marriage ceremony is clear, engaging and enjoyable for you and your guests. If required, I have also worked alongside Chinese interpreters to help family members feel included throughout the celebration. Nothing is ever too difficult, and I am always happy to accommodate your individual needs.
Chinese weddings are rich in symbolism, family values and beautiful traditions. Many couples choose to include a traditional Tea Ceremony, one of the most cherished customs in Chinese culture. During this special ritual, the newlyweds respectfully present tea to their parents and elder relatives as a gesture of gratitude, honour and appreciation. Family members often respond with words of blessing and gifts, such as jewellery or the traditional red envelopes symbolising prosperity and good fortune. I have even been delighted to receive my celebrant fee in a beautiful red envelope on occasion—a lovely cultural gesture I always treasure.
Another beautiful tradition involves the bride leaving her family home beneath a red umbrella held by a respected “Good Luck Woman.” This custom symbolises protection, happiness and fertility, while rice and beans are traditionally scattered to bring prosperity and good fortune to the newlyweds.
