It all began years ago when I witnessed a Celebrant at a friends Wedding. I thought “ I would love to do that” It was only an Intention planted in my mind, but within a year it was a reality.

I often get asked how can I get family members involved in the ceremony?
So here are a few ideas and options.
Processional – Brides (or grooms!), love the idea of walking down the aisle with dad, but what about mum? Or step dad? Or even a grandparent ? There is no reason why you can’t arrive at your wedding ceremony with both your parents –
Give Away – or approval blessing, a question that would be usually asked of the bride’s father as he hands his daughter over to be married.
Witnesses – witnesses can be anyone over the age of 18 that understands and can clearly hear the legal wording that is said in the ceremony. It is wonderful to use the Maid of Honour or the Best Man or another member of the bridal party, but if they have been given plenty of responsibility and airtime already, then another family member or friend can be included.
Bridal Party- Gone are the days when bridal parties had to be gender specific and perfectly balanced. Couples are now choosing to have their siblings or best friends beside them on the day, regardless of whether the bride has a brother or the groom has 5 best friends while the bride has two.
A new trend is to have boys on one side and girls on the other, which is to swap siblings for the day – e.g. bride’s brother is on the groom’s bridal party and groom’s sister is on the brides. Whatever they choose, what’s most important is they must be emotionally supportive!
Reading – Including close friends to do a reading of poem. I had 4 friends share in and do a poem, one verse each.
As a Marriage Celebrant I encourage my couples to think about whom they have in their family circle who has positively influenced their lives. So why not have them come up during your ceremony to share some lovely words? It doesn’t have to be long, and can be anything from words of wisdom about marriage to why they think you guys are just the sweetest together.
Involving children – I love Melbourne Weddings and often suggest that children and step children can either be part of the bridal party… flower girl, page boy or even be part of a sand ceremony.
